When Waste Comes to Life in Creative Children’s Furniture Design
How to create design without generating waste?
PIPE is a collection focused on improving the design of products made from a waste, which builds on the knowledge of emotional design and uses rounded shapes to generate more positive response to the product. Currently, many products on the market are made from waste or are environmentally conscious but lack elements of quality design. The new PIPE collection designed by LUKRU design studio is made from more accessible materials while maintaining emotional design and using circular production methods. The use of such waste ma- terials in products with high-quality design that promotes positive emotions increases awareness of waste processing into valuable products that could also be prepared for mass production. The goal is to create an attractive design from waste that would catch the attention of the furniture industry enough to reconsider standard manufacturing practices.
The PIPE collection offers a creative approach to repurposing sewage pipes in the design of children‘s outdoor furniture. Concept includes objects transformed from such materials, naturally raising awareness about waste, fostering a positive attitude, and highlighting the importance of sustainability and recycling. The goal of this collection is to redefine waste, shifting its perception from a mere byproduct to a valuable resource. It seeks to utilize readily available yet overlooked materials, often dismissed as waste, but holding hidden potential for innovative and sustainable design solutions.
The material being studied is PVC, typically used for waste water systems in buildings and construction, which meets the requirements for minimal waste, strength, moldability, and processability of waste into a functional product. The design of the product also took into account safety and the structural integrity of the products.
